Another
busy week down and now there are just three weeks until spring break. We will be working hard these next few weeks
to keep the learning going. This past
week we studied fantasy vs. reality, asking questions to comprehend,
adjectives, time and long O words. This
next week will be filled with many new things as well.
Reading/Phonics/Spelling-
In reading this week we will be reading stories from our reader that have a
flying theme. Our selections will be “See the Ball Fly!” p 46, “The Kite” p 48, and “Toys That Fly” p 64. These are great stories to read and improve
our fluency on nights where we have to read.
This week we are also going to begin to talk about using some sensory
images to better understand a story. We
will also be introducing some new high frequency words; shout, head, ball, should, never.
Our vocabulary words for the week are; laughter, meadow, and perhaps. These are good words to study on a reading
night as well. Our spelling words for
the week go along with our phonics skills.
We will be talking about different words with the long I sound. In particular, we will be talking about words
that have an i, y, and ight. The spelling list, which is also online at the
blog spot, has examples of these words.
Math-
I am very impressed on how well we all mastered time. I thought this was something that might be on
the harder side but everyone did a great job.
We are going to switch gears this week from time to shapes. We will be studying 3D shapes. In order to get to 3D shapes we will need to
review some previous shapes in order to talk about how to build the new
shapes. We are going to have a lot of
hands on activities with this unit. We
will also be looking at how we can take a few shapes and put them together to
make new ones.
Grammar/Writing-
In grammar this week we are going to focus on making comparisons. We will be talking about finding words that
compare one thing, two things, and two or more things. We will be talking about how to make the
phrases as well. For example he is
taller than her. We are just comparing
two people. We will just be looking for
those key adjectives that compare. In
writing this week we are going to be working on writing with a purpose and
writing with purple words. Purple words
are words that are very rarely used.
They are great words that replace ordinary words. Instead of saying something is good or fun, I
try to have the kids come up with better words such as fantastic or
marvelous.
Social
Studies- This week we will be reading the next
few lessons out of our social studies book.
We will be focusing on our school and what it is like and compare that
to another school in another place. We
will also be talking about our neighborhoods and what important roles that
there are in our communities. We will be talking about how everyone has a role
to fill and that our parents and one we will fill one of those roles.

Just
a reminder that Monday is a library day. Please return your books on Monday. Remember to bring those library books back if they are at home. We will be going to the library to check out
new books.
Be
sure to send in those box tops. Every Thursday I send down our bag of box
tops to the office. If you have any box
tops or food labels that can be redeemed for money please send them in and I
will get them turned in.
Mark your
calendars- March the 15th from
11:50-12:50 we will be throwing our last party of the year. This will be our spring party. It is going to have a Dr. Seuss theme. Mrs. Parker, our room mom, already has some
great ideas but she does need a little help.
She was wondering if you are able to help with drinks, snacks, games, or
anything if you could please contact her via email. Her email address is kimbraparker@wowway.com. I am just as excited as the kiddos are for
this party. I can’t wait to see what fun
things we will be doing!
We met Professor Popcorn this week! One of the assistants at the Vanderburgh
County Purdue Extension office will be here for the next five weeks to teach us
about the food groups and to eat healthy.
This is a great program and the kids get a nice healthy treat at the end
of each session.
On Thursday the North District Family 5K forms were
sent home. The race will be at North
High School at 3pm on April 6th, with the family fun beginning at 1 pm. Early registration is $25 for an
individual and $40 for a family after that it will be $30 and $50. Please come out and join us!
Enjoy
your weekend!
Thanks,
Robert Moreland
