Athletic Summer Camps offered by the North High School coaches

If you are looking for a way to keep up with a sport over the summer, then the North Attendance District has just the place for you.  The following summer camps are being offered in the following sports.

Penny War Winners!!

We have won the first grade division of the penny war campaign.  We were in overall 4th place in the entire school.  Our class brought in $94.57 of the collected $1,008.90.  We can now help buy supplies and other needs of less fortunate EVSC students.  I just wanted to thank everyone for their donations. We will get to have free freey pops sometime this upcoming week!  See everyone tomorrow at school!

Wednesday's Field Trip

We sure had fun exploring the Evansville Children's Museum.  The kids all had fun learning about different things.  My favorite thing was the water area.  Here are a few photos from the trip.

Some Extra Happenings!

Seven Habits for Highly Effective Families:  We will be hosting a book club for parents interested in learning more about Covey’s Seven Habits (dates to be announced).  You can purchase your book at Barnes and Noble on June 8^th and Oak Hill will benefit from the sales.  This would be a win-win for everyone! 

BARNES AND NOBLE DAY:  On June 8^th Oak Hill will be hosting a reading book fair at Barnes and Noble.  A schedule of events will be posted on our web site.  When making purchases, please let the cashier know that you would like Oak Hill to benefit from the sales.

KEY CONTRIBUTOR CAMPAIGN: Our Key Contributor Campaign is still going on.  A key can be sponsored for $20, an octave for $150, and a keyboard for $1,000.  Envelopes were sent home when the campaign began.  If you don’t have your envelope any longer, but would still like to sponsor, please stop by Oak Hill and you can take care of it in the front office.  This would be a wonderful way to honor your child as a plaque will be permanently displayed in the piano keyboard lab with the student or family names.  Research shows the positive effects that music has on brain-based learning.

Mr. Moreland's Memos fro May 20-22

It sure has been a great year!  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in first grade.  I could not have gotten a better class.  Everyone will truly be missed next year. I want to thank everyone for supporting their students.  You have made my job easier for helping them out at home.  Keep at it over the summer to sharpen their skills for second grade.  Thank you for supporting me as well and all of the wonderful gifts I got for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Teacher Appreciation Week.  As I said earlier, I will miss all 21 of you guys next year.  I want to wish everyone only the best of luck as you begin you journey into second grade.  Below is a list of some things that will be coming up this last week of school.

On Field Day, May 21-  Available to help on field day?  Contact our room mother, Mrs. Parker at 812-626-1022 or kimbraparker@wowway.com.   It is scheduled for May 21st with a rain date on May 22nd.  First grade field day activities will be from 8:15-8:45.  Be sure to wear shorts, if it’s warm enough and tennis shoes as we will be outside for some fun and games.

Lunch on Field Day- Lunch on Field Day, the 21^st, will be provided, at no cost to students, by Papa John’s Pizza.  We will all have pizza and breadsticks.  The PTA is awesome and blessed us with this opportunity.  There is only one catch.  If it is raining on Tuesday then Field Day will be on Wednesday along with the pizza.  Be mindful of the weather this next week in order to make sure your student has their lunch with them. 

Plastic Sacks- We will be cleaning out our desks and drawers of all of our art supplies.  If you could please send a plastic grocery sack to school with your student on Monday and Tuesday, it would be much appreciated.  This will make carrying everything so much easier.  We will be taking everything home on Tuesday. 

Report Cards- Report Cards will be sent home the last day of school.  Be sure to be on the lookout for them as they will have information on who their teacher will be for second grade.

Do you happen to have those pennies just laying around or jingling in your pocket?  A fourth grader here at Oak Hill can is having a penny war.  She is raising money in order to purchase hygiene supplies for less fortunate students.  You can bring in your pennies, or any other loose change all this week.  The classroom that bring in the most will get a special surprise and the best overall classroom will get an extra something special as well.

Mr. Moreland's Memos for May 13-17

This will be our last full week together. (Tear)  We will have just three days after that and then it will be summer vacation.  Remember to finish out these last few days of school strong and not to let any behavior slip.  We have been talking more and more about the 7 Healthy Habits and using our friends RJ and Louis to show us ways to help control our behavior.  We have had a great year and I know we can end on a strong note.

Reading/Phonics/Spelling- This week in reading we will be working on our fluency.  Since we have finished our reading book series we will be doing a reader’s theater style of reading.  The students will be reading scripts in small groups using their synergy skills in order to improve their sight word knowledge and reading fluency.  Throughout the week will be reviewing all of the most recent phonics sounds.  This week will also be our final spelling list.  All of the words on this list are words that we have had in the past.  They go along with all of the past phonics sounds we have studied.  The spelling list is posted on our classroom blog.

Math- Now that we have covered everything we need to do for our report card we will have a chance to sharpen some of our skills that we have not used in a while.  This week I plan to make every day different.  We are going to working on graphing, missing addends, going back to some subtraction, addition word problems and balancing the scales with addition.  I have talked with some of the second grade teachers here at Oak Hill and they say the biggest thing they can do over the summer is to practice the basic facts for addition and subtraction.

Grammar/Writing- This week in grammar we will be reviewing some of the things we have learned throughout the school year.  We are still working on remembering that every sentence needs a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.  We will review pronouns, when to use I and Me, and reviewing combining sentences.  In our writing journals we will be reflecting on some of the things we learned this year.  We will talk about our favorite games and our favorite subjects.

Junior Achievement- This week we will be doing Junior Achievement.  A volunteer from the business world will be coming into our classroom and teaching us the basics of saving money and why we save as well as what jobs there are and you can be anything you would like to be.  This is a great program for the students.  I know they will learn a lot.

FIELD DAY:  Field day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21^st.  This is a change from May 22^nd.  We felt that we needed to have a rain date in place in the event that we would have inclement weather.  We didn’t want to disappoint our Wildcats by missing out on this event should we have rain.  Thank you in advance to Jennifer Zimmer, Jennifer Gossett, and our entire PTA volunteers who are helping to facilitate this day.  Please note that on field day that students will be eating pizza from Papa Johns and our cafeteria will not be serving any school lunches.

SPRING PICTURES:  A friendly reminder that school pictures are due back as soon as possible.  Please send in a check for your pictures or return the unwanted package.  Checks should be made payable to Inter-State Studio.

Mr. Moreland's Memos for May 6-10

Two full weeks of school and three days is all we have left together in first grade.  We have been working extremely hard on using our seven habits and have read stories about how to use self-control and use the seven habits.  We are working really hard on being proactive and doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.  If you would like to know a little more, ask your students about RJ and his bad day and Louis and his volcano.  

Reading/Phonics/Spelling- This week we will be reading the last set of stories from our reading series.  All of our stories this week are centered on the theme of “Building Things”.  This will lead perfectly into second grade as we build on things in first grade in order to prepare them for second grade.  We will also be making connections as well as talking about cause and effect.  The stories that we will be reading this week are “The Town that Grew” p 278, “Sand Castle” p 280, and “Build with Sand and Ice” p 306.  To go along with these stories we will be studying the following words as they are our high frequency words and vocabulary words for the week; circle, toward, leave, grew, toppled, wreck, welcoming. Our phonics lesson this week will be centered on the OI, and OY sounds.  We will be doing several activities this week to reinforce these sounds.  Our spelling words, which can also be found on our blog, are all centered on the OY and OI sounds.

  

Math- This week in math we will take our knowledge of adding three numbers fact families one step further.  We will be discussing and find out how to find a missing addend.  (ex. 8 + ? = 11  ?=3)  We have a couple of great games that involve some cards in order for students to think outside of the box in order to find the missing numbers.  If you are looking for an extra thing to do over the week you could practice addition problems, fact families, and subtraction.

Grammar/Writing- This week in grammar we will be talking about how to combine sentences in order to make our thoughts sound more fitting.  For example; Steve walks to school.  Steve runs to school.  We will be able to say Steve walks and runs to school.  This will involve a little bit of writing.  We will also be writing about things that we can build and be making connections to our stories that we are reading throughout the week.

 

Science- We will be finishing up our solids and liquids this week and make some more comparisons and briefly discuss gases.  We will then switch gears to discussing what we might see on our field trip to Wesselman woods.  We will be talking a little bit about nature and habitats.

 Please return your library books on Monday.  Remember to bring those library books back if they are at home.  The librarian is wrapping up the year and will be sending home notices for anyone who still has a book out.  Please be sure to return them.

Field Trip- We are going to take a field trip to Wesselman Woods on Friday.  Please be sure to return the form ASAP with the $8.  This field trip is a great one for parents to attend as well.  If you would like to attend, the best way is either to follow us in the morning when we leave from school or meet us there.  If you do plan on attending the only thing we ask is that you make sure you have filled out the EVSC volunteer form.  It is just a formality that we all must go through.  If you are not sure let me know and I can check the list for you as well as get you a form.  I am looking forward to seeing some animals and a nature walk!  This week we will talk a lot about animals and then we will get to see them come to life.

Field Day-Field Day will be on May 21st 2013. This is the Tuesday before the last day of school. This change will allow teachers to spend their last day of class with their students and also allow us a "rain day" if it were to rain on field day. The first grade activities will take place from 8:15-8:45.  I know we will have more information to come as this much anticipated event draws near.
