Mr. Moreland's Memos for March 18-22

I wanted to say a special thank you on a few different topics.  First off thank you to all of the parents that came in Friday (3/15) and made our Spring/Dr. Seuss party a huge success.  I know all of the kids sure had a good timde.  I also want to say thank you for supporting the Chinese acrobats.  If you sent in your $1 it went to help them with their travel expenses.  They were a treat to watch.  This will be our last week before spring break.  I know this time of the year we tend to get a little restless and excited.  I just wanted to remind everyone that we need to stay focused and be proactive and always be doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

Reading/Phonics/Spelling- This week we will be reading stories that all center around the theme of “I Can Do It!”  We will be reading and discussing the following stories from our reader; “Nothing Stops Cory” p 88, “Whistle for Willie” p 90 and “A Winning Swimmer” p 120.  As we read these stories we will be focusing in on two major reading comprehension strategies.  We will be focusing in on making inferences and more on using our senses to create images and relate to the story.  We will have some new vocabulary words and sight words to study this week.  This week they are: early, thought, nothing, along, errand, instead, suddenly.  If you go please go over those words with you student it would be much appreciated.  In phonics this week our words will all have the –or sounds.  Our spelling words, which are also online, have the same sounds.

Math- This week in math we will be finishing up our study on both solid and plane shapes.  We will be sorting solid shapes and using plane shapes to build solid shapes.  We are going to have a short assessment on Friday over shapes.

Grammar/Writing- This week in grammar we be taking our adjectives another step by using number words.  We have discussed how adjectives can tell what kind and use color words.  Now we are going to talk about how adjectives can tell how many.  In our writing this week we will be quickly reviewing proper nouns, in particularly days of the week.  We will be writing about our experiences with doing things such as baseball, riding bikes, swimming, etc.  We will tie our writing into our reading.

Social Studies- This will be our last week reading about our communities and families.  We will be tying it all together and making comparisons to our school and community to other communities around the world and in our book.  We have learned words like culture, celebrate, calendar, rules, neighbors, neighborhood and many more.

Mr. Moreland's Memos for March 11-15

It is hard to believe another week is in the record books and we are already into March and St. Patrick’s Day.  This past week we did many new things.  We talked more in depth about the long I sounds, how to use your senses to help you read and create images, a lot about shapes, when to use –er and –est when comparing nouns and we also talked about our families and some of the customs we celebrate.  It is hard to believe that we can cram so much into one week.  This coming week will not be too much different.

Reading/Phonics/Spelling- This week the stories out of our reader will all have the theme of inventions.  We will be talking a lot about some of the inventions we use daily in order to expand our oral vocabulary.  We will be reading the “Invent It!” p 72, “Kids’ Inventions” p 74 and “Helping Drivers See” p 82.  We will be using these stories to discuss cause and effect.  When we practice building our stamina and increasing our fluency and comprehension while we read to ourselves we will be talking more in depth of how we can use our senses to create images of what we have been reading.  In our reading we will be focusing in on some new words.  Those words that we will study are; children, round, better, machine, or, discovery.  In our phonics this week we will be studying the R sound when it is paired with –ar.  Our spelling words, which are also on our blog, all have the –ar sound in them.

Math- This week in math we will continue to talk about shapes.  We will be discussing more in depth how we can take one shape and make many other shapes and many other kinds of creations.  We will also be talking about 3D shapes and the attributes of the 3D shapes.  We will be sorting them and be looking at examples of them in real life.

Grammar/Writing- This week for grammar we will be talking more about adjectives.  We will be focusing particularly on how color words can be some of the best adjectives and how they help us use our senses to better understand things.  We will also be reviewing how contractions with not are formed.  For writing this week we are going to begin to talk about how to write a How To paper.  We will be doing a few of these together in class in order to get an idea and then we will be writing a how to make cereal page.  We will also be reading and writing a little about some St. Patrick’s Day things such as leprechauns and pots of golf and being lucky.
Social Studies- This week we will continue to make connections and discuss our customs and celebrations.  We will also be taking a look at America and what people in America celebrate compared to other countries around the world.  We are also going to discuss why life in America is so good and what inventions make America worth calling home.  This will help us tie in our stories from our reader and build our oral vocabulary.

Dr. Seuss Day!

Today has been a great day!  What might you say?  Well, tomorrow is Dr. Seuss's birthday.  This morning we enjoyed green eggs and ham.  We sure did like them Sam I am.  We discovered we will eat them here or there and we will eat them anywhere.  Today sure has been fun!  We made hats and did Dr. Seuss math and even read many Dr. Seuss books with everyone!

Mr. Moreland's Memos, March 4th-8th

Another busy week down and now there are just three weeks until spring break.  We will be working hard these next few weeks to keep the learning going.  This past week we studied fantasy vs. reality, asking questions to comprehend, adjectives, time and long O words.  This next week will be filled with many new things as well.

Reading/Phonics/Spelling- In reading this week we will be reading stories from our reader that have a flying theme.  Our selections will be “See the Ball Fly!” p 46, “The Kite” p 48, and “Toys That Fly” p 64.  These are great stories to read and improve our fluency on nights where we have to read.  This week we are also going to begin to talk about using some sensory images to better understand a story.  We will also be introducing some new high frequency words; shout, head, ball, should, never.  Our vocabulary words for the week are; laughter, meadow, and perhaps.  These are good words to study on a reading night as well.  Our spelling words for the week go along with our phonics skills.  We will be talking about different words with the long I sound.  In particular, we will be talking about words that have an i, y, and ight. The spelling list, which is also online at the blog spot, has examples of these words.

Math- I am very impressed on how well we all mastered time.  I thought this was something that might be on the harder side but everyone did a great job.  We are going to switch gears this week from time to shapes.  We will be studying 3D shapes.  In order to get to 3D shapes we will need to review some previous shapes in order to talk about how to build the new shapes.  We are going to have a lot of hands on activities with this unit.  We will also be looking at how we can take a few shapes and put them together to make new ones.

Grammar/Writing- In grammar this week we are going to focus on making comparisons.  We will be talking about finding words that compare one thing, two things, and two or more things.  We will be talking about how to make the phrases as well.  For example he is taller than her.  We are just comparing two people.  We will just be looking for those key adjectives that compare.    In writing this week we are going to be working on writing with a purpose and writing with purple words.  Purple words are words that are very rarely used.  They are great words that replace ordinary words.  Instead of saying something is good or fun, I try to have the kids come up with better words such as fantastic or marvelous.

Social Studies- This week we will be reading the next few lessons out of our social studies book.  We will be focusing on our school and what it is like and compare that to another school in another place.  We will also be talking about our neighborhoods and what important roles that there are in our communities. We will be talking about how everyone has a role to fill and that our parents and one we will fill one of those roles.

We met Professor Popcorn this week!  One of the assistants at the Vanderburgh County Purdue Extension office will be here for the next five weeks to teach us about the food groups and to eat healthy.  This is a great program and the kids get a nice healthy treat at the end of each session.

On Thursday the North District Family 5K forms were sent home.  The race will be at North High School at 3pm on April 6th, with the family fun beginning at 1 pm.  Early registration is $25 for an individual and $40 for a family after that it will be $30 and $50.  Please come out and join us!
