A Visit From Afar

Today we were blessed to have two very special guests in our building.  We had Mrs. and Mrs. Zhang all the way from China.  Mr. Zhang is the principal at his school and Mrs. Zhang is the assistant principal.  We had a welcome assembly for him this morning.  He spoke with the whole school.  One of his quotes has been sticking with me today.  He said, "The weather is cold, but in the school the hearts are warm."  The students truly are a blessing here at Oak Hill and are very welcoming to any visitor.  Everyone did a great job today in the assembly and we are all very proud to be an Oak Hill Wildcat.

Here is a picture of Mr. Zhang addressing the school.

January 8, 2013

It has been a busy last two days here in room six as we continue learning.  Today, report cards were sent home.  There is one blank that did not get filled in this time.  I did that because we are just now doing our middle of the year assessment for the TRC reading.  We do it three times a year.  Once in the beginning, the middle and the end of the year.  More information will be coming out on how your children scored on the tests later in the next month or so.  Don't be alarmed.

On a good note it seems as if everyone is grasping the concepts of the triple S blend words, greater than, less than, equal to and what a contraction is and how it is formed.  These are all things that everyone needs to know and practice.  Tonight is a spelling night.  If you cannot find the words they should be in a previous post below this one.

Any questions email me at robert.moreland@evsc.k12.in.us.

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!

Here is a brief update on what we have been learning and talking about today.

In reading I introduced making text-to-text connections by reading the gingerbread man and the gingerbread girl stories.  We also talked about short I words and played a high frequency word game with a partner.  We have been working hard on improving our fluency by reading in groups.  Each group will read for the class tomorrow in a reader's theater style.

In math we made a book explaining greater than and less than and sorted number based on which number is the greatest and the least.  The homework tonight is right along those lines.  You will have to determine which number is the greatest and which one is the smallest.

In grammar today we worked on possessive nouns.  We learned about adding an apostrophe S and an S apostrophe.  In order to do that we discussed the difference between singular possessive and plural possessive.

At the end of the day we are going to discuss more how a seed grows and how seeds get spread all over by reading Eric Carle's, The Tiny Seed.  We are going to use our schema on what we already know about seeds, make connections, and then build new schema by filling in a KWL chart.  A KWL chart tells us what we already know (K), what we want to know (W) and what we learned (L).

We sure were busy today!
